Key Points:
- The Calyx Institute has a new membership level - Sprout.
- With the Sprout membership, they provide a SIM card that you can use in any T-Mobile compatible device - unlike their other membership options where you have to use their provided hotspot device.
- The Sprout membership level is $500/year, or $150/quarter, and includes unlimited T-Mobile data.
The Calyx Institute is a non-profit organization that includes T-Mobile based data plans with their memberships - a perk they are able to offer due to old terms negotiated by Clear Wireless and Sprint (who T-Mobile acquired). There are other non-profit organizations offering these plans, like PCs for People, at even lower costs - but those are only available to those income qualified. Calyx memberships are available to all.
Their plans have been on our list of Top Pick Data Plans for a long time because they offer unlimited data at very reasonable rates.
Previously you had to use the specific mobile hotspot device that was provided to you by Calyx, but now, for the first time, they are offering a BYOD membership option.

New Membership Level - Sprout
Starting this week, Calyx now has a new membership level - Sprout.
With Sprout, you can use any data device that you want, as long as it's compatible with the T-Mobile network.
Like other Calyx plans, you must purchase a membership for either one year, or one quarter (3 months). For the yearly option, the plan is $500/year, which comes to $41.66/month, and the quarterly option is $150/quarter, which is $50/month.
With all of the Calyx plans, you have unlimited domestic hotspot data with no throttling, but the data is subject to network management after 100GB.
This chart shows the new Sprout membership level along with the other two current membership levels that are listed on their website as of today:

Device Options for the New Sprout Membership
With this new membership level, their SIM card should be usable with any T-Mobile compatible device. This includes hotspots and mobile routers that might offer additional features like antenna ports, multiple internet source, bonding and band selection.
This should include popular routers from Peplink, Insty Connect, Winegard/WiFiRanger, GL.INet and more.
Calyx has provided a link to T-Mobile's Prepaid BYOD checker where you can confirm if your device is compatible via IMEI.

Switching to BYOD Sprout For Existing Members

If you are a current Calyx member, you will not be able to just use your existing SIM in a different device. You will have to switch to Sprout, and have Calyx send you a new SIM.
Calyx has made this easy and free for existing members through October 2025 to handle.
All you'll need to do is login to your account, select 'Devices' and then click the 'Order Replacement Device' button to switch. Once you select the "BYOD SIM" option you will be switched to Sprout for the remainder of your membership.
They have not said what their switch policy will be after October, so we recommend handling this before then.
Get a Free Month of Calyx Institute Membership
To further sweeten the deal, Calyx Institute gives all of their members a referral link that offers a free month of service to anyone they refer (also adding a free month to the existing member's membership).
You are welcome to our Calyx Institute Referral Link. We rotate which team member gets the referral credit, which helps our team keep this plan in active service as well.

Conclusion
Calyx has long offered unlimited data plans for amazing rates, which is why we've included them on our list of Top Pick plans.
The only downside was that you were locked into using the data device provided with the plans. So with Calyx now having the option to BYOD, their plans are an even better option to consider.
