Three months after releasing major update 8.6, Peplink released firmware 8.6.1, which builds on the new features introduced in 8.6.0.
The most notable change is to Synergy Mode, Peplink's feature for combining multiple Peplink routers into a single managed system. With 8.6.1, Peplink removed the Care plan and license requirements for Synergy Controllers and synergized devices, making Synergy a baseline feature you no longer have to pay extra for.
Starlink integration also gets several improvements. Peplink added a Starlink event log to the Orbit WAN interface, made some other improvements and fixes, and also removed the Care plan requirement for local access to the Starlink Dish API.
Another great change is that Peplink is continuing to expand IPv6 support, albeit slowly. Firmware 8.6.1 extends Peplink's existing basic IPv6 WAN support to the built-in cellular connections on selected routers and modem variants. Previously, Peplink's limited IPv6 WAN support was primarily available through Ethernet WAN connections and not the integrated cellular modems.
Not every modem and model combo is supported, and the release notes still describe it as a beta feature. However, the following models we cover are specifically listed:
- Balance: 20X, 310 5G, 310 Fiber 5G, 310X
- MAX BR: BR1 Pro CAT-20, BR1 Pro 5G, BR2 Pro
- Transit: Pro E
- B One: B One 5G & Plus
Even with this addition, Peplink's IPv6 support is limited.
8.6.1 also includes many bug and security fixes. These include several fixes for SpeedFusion and SpeedFusion Boost packet loss, Wi-Fi WAN and Wi-Fi 6 roaming problems, cellular carrier-profile switching, and multiple security vulnerabilities.
One important upgrade requirement: Routers must be running firmware 8.6.0 before they can upgrade to 8.6.1.
Peplink also put out updates to two other devices - Access Points and Sim Injectors. Details on those are here:
Key Mobile Internet Related Considerations:
- Peplink eliminated licensing and Care plan requirements for Synergy mode, allowing any compatible routers to use this feature as a controller or synergized device.
- The update includes many important bug fixes and security updates.
- Users must upgrade to 8.6.0 before installing 8.6.1.
