Key points:
- Starlink recategorized Standby Mode as a stationary plan, not intended for in-motion use - Standby mode provides unlimited data 500 Kbps for $5/month.
- Starlink Roam, Local Priority, and Global Priority plans now have an in-motion speed limit of 100mph, down from 450mph.
- Starlink created two new plans, Aviation 300MPH and Aviation 450MPH, for aviation users.
Starlink recently made significant changes to in-motion usage for several plans, including Roam, Local Priority, Global Priority, and Standby Mode. These changes are all downgrades and put much more restrictive in-motion use limits than was previously the case.

Standby Mode Not Intended For In-Motion Use
The most impactful change to our audience of nomads who work, live, and travel in vans, boats, and RVs is Starlink's recategorization of Standby Mode from an in-motion option to one "not intended for" in-motion use.
Standby Mode was introduced in August of 2025 as an option to pause service while still receiving firmware updates and being 'at the ready' when needed. That option is available on consumer plans to switch to, including Roam and Residential, for just $5/month and provides unlimited data at 500 Kbps.
Here is the changed in-motion Starlink FAQ:
Note that the wording for Residential plans states that in-motion use is "not permitted," whereas for Standby Mode it is "not intended."
While we have not yet confirmed this, some user reports indicate that Standby Mode may continue to work for in-motion use under 10mph. If so, this would still make Standby Mode a viable option to provide low-data connectivity for many cruisers and boaters.
But the 10mph limit would obviously mean that those in land-based vehicles would find Standby Mode unreliable for any connectivity while moving.
100MPH Limit for Roam and Priority Plans
The other big change is that Starlink now limits in-motion use to 100mph for the Roam, Local, and Global Priority plans. Previously, these plans had a 450mph speed limit.
100mph does not significantly affect our audience of land and sea-based travelers, but it was definitely intended to affect private aviation users, who increasingly rely on Starlink for data services while airborne. Starlink now offers two new, much more expensive plans designed for the private aviation market: Aviation 300MPH and Aviation 450MPH.
- Aviation 300MPH: $250/month with 20GB included, then $10/GB. (Limited to 12NM from land)
- Aviation 450MPH: $1,000/month with 20GB included, then $50/GB (Includes Ocean Coverage)
These are terrible options for aviation users compared to the Roam and Priority plans pilots could use before.
Concluding Thoughts
Starlink, as has been the case for years now, is again suddenly changing key terms of service that affect segments of its customer base. Sometimes these changes are positive, but often they are not, and Starlink putting speed limits on popular plans is an unwelcome change for affected users.
This is particularly the case with Standby Mode, which provides enough data (up to 500kbps) for many use cases, including in-motion use cases, for nomads traveling on land and water. With this change, Starlink in Standby Mode can no longer be reliably used for streaming audio or low-res video while driving and navigating, except potentially for boaters cruising under 10mph.
