Glossary Definition for: Broadband

In radio communications, broadband refers to a higher bandwidth transmission capable of transporting multiple signals simultaneously. This term became popular in the 1990s for describing any internet access technology faster than 56Kbps, which was the speed of a dial-up modem.

Broadband is relative term – and over time what it takes to be considered “broadband” has been gradually increasing.

As of early 2015 the FCC has redefined its official definition to require speeds of 25Mbps down and 3Mbps up for an internet provider to be able to claim that they are offering “broadband” service.
