T-Mobile officially launched the Starlink-powered T-Satellite service back in July with basic text messaging. Now, T-Mobile is offering support for specific apps, including voice and video chat on WhatsApp.
T-Satellite allows compatible smartphones (this support article keeps an updated list) to maintain a limited internet connection when cell towers are unavailable by communicating directly with Starlink satellites in outdoor areas where a clear view of the sky is possible.
As expected, when the program first launched, T-Mobile and Starlink are working to enable faster connections and more functionality, and the first big leap happened last week with the addition of compatible apps for iOS and Android:
- AccuWeather
- Apple Compass (iOS only)
- Apple Fitness (iOS only)
- Apple Maps (iOS only)
- Apple Messages (iOS only)
- Apple Music (iOS only)
- Apple Weather (iOS only)
- AllTrails (Android only - iOS support expected Nov. 2025)
- CalTopo
- Google Find Hub (Android only)
- Google Maps (Android only - iOS support expected soon)
- Google Messages (Android only)
- Google Personal Safety (Android only)
- onX Backcountry
- onX Hunt
- onX Offroad
- T-Life
- X
- Yahoo Mail (Android only)
For T-Mobile Business customers, the following business apps are also supported:
- Dialpad
- Florian
- Multiline
- T-Mobile Direct Connect
This means that all these apps will work on a T-Satellite connection, and WhatsApp will even work with video and audio calls, albeit at a lower resolution.
T-Satellite service is included on T-Mobile's top-tier smartphone plans for both business and consumer customers, or as a $10/month add-on for other T-Mobile plans. Non-T-Mobile customers can get T-Satellite with a compatible phone that supports eSIM.
Key Mobile Internet Related Considerations:
- T-Satellite now enables some popular apps to utilize satellite connectivity while off-grid, provided there is a clear view of the sky.
- WhatsApp can utilize voice and video calling while on T-Satellite.
- T-Satellite is included on T-Mobile's premium smartphone plans, as a $10/month add-on to other T-Mobile plans, and can also be activated on compatible phones with other carriers via eSIM.
