Back in mid-August 2025, Starlink introduced Standby Mode and ended the free pausing feature. Along with this change, Starlink also removed the Roam 10GB plan from its options. However, customers who remained on the Roam 10GB plan were grandfathered...until now.
The Roam 10GB plan offered 10GB of high-speed data for $10/month and was a good option for occasional and weekend users, as well as for those using Starlink as a backup to cellular. But now Starlink is formally retiring the plan for grandfathered customers.
Starlink is sending out notifications to customers on the Roam 10GB plan stating that the plan is being fully retired. The notifications provide at least 30 days of notice and give affected customers the following options:
- Do nothing, and the plan will automatically transition to Standby Mode at the normal $5/month price.
- Customers can manually change to a different, currently available plan.
- Customers who opt to change to the Roam 100GB plan will receive an 80% discount for two months, which works out to the same $10/month as the Roam 10GB plan. After the two months are up, customers who remain on the Roam 100GB plan will be charged the normal $50/month price.
Offering such a steep discount on the 100GB plan for two months for affected customers is a great offer.
It was unfortunate to see the Roam 10GB plan retired last August, as it was a nice option for many people.
It's no surprise that Starlink is ending the grandfathered status of this plan; what is surprising is that it didn't end the plan sooner. Unlike cellular carriers, Starlink has historically not grandfathered data plans.
