When Starlink massively revamped its Priority plans back in March, one question that remained open was whether Starlink would continue to allow the Roam Unlimited plan to access Global Priority data to use in ocean areas as the new Terms of Service (TOS) were contradictory. Starlink did adjust the TOS, clarifying that ocean use was supported by enabling Global Priority data.
Now, Starlink has renamed this capability as "Ocean Mode," likely to avoid confusing Global Priority data with the Global Priority plan.
Here is the new verbiage in the TOS:
"Starlink may permit Roam Unlimited users to opt-in to Ocean Mode. When Ocean Mode is enabled, in addition to your Roam Service fee, you will be billed for all data consumed (both on land and water) in the current and subsequent billing cycles until you opt-out. Ocean Mode is designed for ocean coverage, but may be used on land."
Only the feature appears to have been renamed, and Starlink has retained the TOS wording that it "may permit" users to opt in to Ocean Mode, which leaves them the option to disable this feature if they wish.
As noted in the TOS, Ocean Mode can also be used while on land, providing high-priority data when customers may need it. The price for Ocean Mode data remains the same at $2/GB for Roam Unlimited customers.
Key Mobile Internet Related Considerations:
- Starlink "Ocean Mode" is the new name for the ability to opt-in to Global Priority data on the Roam Unlimited plan.
- Ocean Mode allows Roam Unlimited customers to get service in open ocean areas
- Ocean Mode also works on land for those wanting higher-priority data. The cost remains the same at $2/GB.
