Inseego has launched the Wavemaker FX4200 router, which is certified by all three major carriers and utilizes the Qualcomm X72 cellular modem. It will be available at retailers in late November or early December for $899.
The FX4200 follows the introduction last May of the first router in this new Wavemaker series, the T-Mobile-exclusive FX4100.
Both models share the same core Qualcomm Dragonwing Fixed Wireless Access Gen 3 Platform, which utilizes the Qualcomm X72 cellular modem, and are visually similar, but there are substantial performance and feature differences.
The first is cellular band support. As a device certified on all three carriers, the FX4200 supports all the major LTE and 5G cellular bands:
- 5G (Sub-6GHz): n2, n5, n7, n12, n13, n14, n25, n26, n29, n30, n38, n41, n48, n66, n70, n71, n77, n78
- 4G LTE: 2, 4, 5, 7, 12, 13, 14, 17, 25, 26, 29, 30, 38, 41, 42, 43, 46, 48, 66, 70, 71
The FX4100 only supports T-Mobile bands.
The FX4200 improves significantly on the FX4100 in terms of ports for connectivity:
- Four Ethernet ports - two 2.5 Gigabit, and two Gigabit
- Two USB-C Ports: One for data output, and one for power
- 4x External SMA cellular antenna ports
The FX4200 has only internal Wi-Fi and GPS antennas with no option for external antennas. Wi-Fi range can be extended, however, with Inseego X700 Wi-Fi mesh units.
One interesting aspect of the FX4200 is its integrated battery, which provides backup/bridge power. Unlike a mobile hotspot device, the FX4200 is not designed to run for long on battery power; instead, it's intended to keep the router running during short-duration power outages, or for moving the device from one power source to another. The battery is rated at 5050 mAh, about the same capacity as many flagship smartphones - in other words, small for a full-featured router.
Another advantage of the FX4200 over the FX4100 is its dual SIM slots, which allow for basic failover.
Like the rest of the Wavemaker line, this is a business-focused device that comes with Inseego's cloud management system, which provides remote access and other features.
