100GB Plan Changes
The 100GB Mobile Internet plan for $50/month has been a top pick since it released in 2020, and has undergone several iterations over the years. But the biggest downside of the plan has been since August 2021, the plan was only available when used on a T-Mobile branded 5G mobile hotspot device.
That has now changed, and the plan is available for any data only device - including LTE hotspots, and compatible cellular routers.
Other welcomed additions is that use in Canada & Mexico is now increased to 15GB of high speed usage from 5GB. And international usage around the globe is now 5GB.
Retired Plans
One of the changes that T-Mobile made was to retire some of the previously available data-only plans. The plans that we covered that are no longer available are:
- 50GB - $50/month
- 30GB - $10/month
The 50GB plan was previously an alternative to our Top Pick 100GB version of that plan, for those who needed a data plan for non 5G T-Mobile mobile hotspot devices.
And although the 30GB plan didn't meet our criteria for mobile internet when it was released this time last year, we also really liked the $10 plan as a good option for a backup plan or remote monitoring.
There are two other smaller plans that T-Mobile also retired: a 10GB/$30 plan, and a 5GB/$20plan.
Those who have these plans are grandfathered in, but they are no longer available for new activations.
New Plans
In addition to retiring some plans, T-Mobile is also now offering two new plans - neither of which meets our definition of mobile internet (offering at least 50GB of high speed mobile hotspot).
The first plan is a 25GB data plan, and it is $25/month for hotspots, or $30 for tablets. But if this plan is activated on a tablet and added to an existing Experience Beyond or Go5G Next plan, it is only $5/month.
The second new plan is called "Linkport" and it comes with 15GB of data for $10/month - which might still be a suitable plan for those in need of a back-up or remote monitoring option.
Changes to International Data
T-Mobile also made some changes to the amount of international data available with these data plans.
Previously, all data plans included 5GB of high-speed data for use in Canada/Mexico, and unlimited data at up to 128kbps in 210+ other countries.
As mentioned above, the 100GB plan now comes with 15GB of high-speed data for Canada/Mexico, and 5GB of high-speed data for 210+ other countries.
The 25GB plan comes with 5GB of high-speed data in Canada/Mexico, and 5GB high-speed data in 11 other countries. The Linkport/15GB plan has 2GB of high-speed data in Canada/Mexico, and 5GB high-speed data in 11 other countries.
Summary
It's nice to see that the top-tier 100GB data plan can now be activated on any compatible data device, and not restrcited to T-Mobile branded 5G devices only as it previously was. And it's also a nice change to have more international data added to the plan.
However given T-Mobile recently increased their high speed mobile hotspot cap to 250GB on their top end smartphone plan, we had really hoped to see data only device plans from the carriers start to come with more data too.
Still, their 100GB mobile internet plan is the best priced for postpaid direct from the carriers:
- T-Mobile: 100GB - $50/mo
- Verizon: 100GB - $90/mo
- (as low as $40 bundled with other lines, also offers a 150GB option for $110/mo)
- AT&T: 100GB - $90/mo
While it was disappointing to see the 50GB and 30GB plans retired, it is nice to see the 25GB tablet plan for only $5/month (with a compatible phone line). And the 15GB hotspot plan remains a great option for back-up or remote monitoring data.
However, for T-Mobile's network there are other plans to consider - including the Calyx Institute's unlimited data plan that can be less than $50/month.
